Active ingredient and effect

The active ingredient of the commercial product Iberogast® contains an active ingredient combination. This includes angelica root, chamomile flowers, caraway seeds, milk thistle fruits, lemon balm leaves, peppermint leaves, candytuft (Iberis amara), Celandine and licorice root. The combination of active ingredients is used to treat functional diseases of the gastrointestinal tract. In these cases, the intestine is often hypersensitive to stimuli. This is where the effect of Iberogast® comes into play. The combination of active ingredients inhibits the nerve reaction to mechanical and chemical stimuli. The chemical stimuli include an increased release of messenger substances, such as so-called serotonin and bradykinin. Both contribute to the stimulus response of the intestine and both are dampened by the phytopharmaceutical. Iberogast® also causes the intestinal muscles to relax. This effect is concentration-dependent. Iberogast® also activates chloride channels and activates the so-called enteral nervous system. This leads to increased secretion in the intestine. The combination of active ingredients has an antispasmodic effect on the stomach muscles, supports the natural stomach movement, calms the stomach nerves and reduces gastric acid production. In addition, an anti-inflammatory effect could be demonstrated. Iberogast® catches so-called free radicals and thus has an antioxidant effect. Furthermore, the herbal medicine modulates components of the body's own defense system, the so-called cytokines.

Side effect diarrhea

Iberogast® usually has a stomach-calming effect. But because it contains 31% alcohol, intolerance and diarrhea can occur in some cases. Certain ingredients can also have a laxative effect in individual cases. In addition, the concentration-dependent mechanism of action on the intestinal muscles and the activation of the chloride channels at high concentrations or a sensitive reaction to Iberogast® can contribute to diarrhea. If you are unsure, it is advisable to consult your doctor or pharmacist.

Important application information

If the symptoms do not improve with the use of Iberogast® and there is no alleviation of the symptoms even after a week, a doctor must be consulted urgently in order to rule out organic causes for the symptoms.
In principle, children under 6 years of age should not treat abdominal pain on their own, but always consult a doctor so that no serious causes are overlooked.

Iberogast during pregnancy

Since Iberogast® contains alcohol, it should only be taken with caution during pregnancy. We recommend that you consult your doctor beforehand.

What are the side effects of the pill?

There is usually no connection between Iberogast® and reduced contraceptive protection due to the birth control pill. It is different if the combination of active ingredients is not tolerated by the Iberogast®. If this leads to diarrhea and / or vomiting, the contraceptive pill is no longer available.

Iberogast for heartburn

Most of the time, heartburn is harmless. However, it is not always possible to avoid the triggers for what is known as heartburn.
There are various drugs that bind stomach acid, but do not address the cause. The mechanism of Iberogast® is different. With its herbal combination of active ingredients, Iberogast® influences several factors. After all, these not only lead to the discomfort in the gastrointestinal area being alleviated. To a certain extent, it can also combat possible causes. If the heartburn persists regularly or for a long period of time, it is advisable to consult a doctor.
