The general goal of upbringing is to prepare adolescents for an independent and responsible life in society so that they can cope with the everyday challenges of life and can behave appropriately.

What means of education are there?

Educational means are actions or reactions of the parent to a behavior of the child, with the aim of influencing the child and leading it to an educational goal. The educator acts on the child and can thus consolidate or change the child's behavior.

Serve as a means of education Praise, reprimand, reminder as well as admonition or punishment etc.

With the praise or reward, the child's behavior and thus also his self-confidence is confirmed and strengthened. This has the consequence that the child shows the desired behavior more often and happily. This is a positive educational tool. Encouragement as a means of education also has a positive effect on the child's self-confidence and confirms and encourages.

Negative means of upbringing such as reprimand, admonition or punishment should lead to the child no longer showing behavior or changing it, as the educator has negative consequences for his behavior.

In addition, situations in which someone acts as a role model or in which people play, work or speak are also used as a means of education. However, these are not regarded as a direct means of education, whereby the adult acts directly on the child, but as an indirect means of education. As a result, the educator is not always aware of its effect on the child.

What are the parenting styles?

There are different styles of parenting that have evolved throughout history and have been considered the best parenting in different times. A distinction is made between four different basic types.

  1. This includes the authoritarian style of upbringing, the one high level of control and little parental love and has heat as a basic designation. This form of education has gone completely out of fashion in Germany these days and is viewed critically.
  2. Furthermore, there is authoritative education (also more democratic Parenting style called), which is also a high level of parental control has, but also one high degree of love and warmth with parents taking good care of the children. This is the currently prevailing style that is considered to be the best possible upbringing.
  3. There is also the permissive or pampering style of parenting. This is characterized by a high degree of parental love and warmth. The parents do not control the child at all, which gives them a very high degree of freedom.
  4. This high degree of freedom and little control can also be found in neglect (rejecting) upbringing and thus in the ultimate parenting style. With this style, however, there is also the fact that the parents hardly convey love and warmth to the child, but rather one negative attitude towards the child take in.

The authoritative education

The authoritative education combines authoritarian and laissez-faire parenting styles and so represents a very common and successful style. There is a high degree of control and at the same time there is a high degree of acceptance by the child.

The child should be granted a lot of freedom, but at the same time limits and rules are set. The child has to follow the rules but should also be able to understand them, the parents try to explain it to the children in an age-appropriate manner.

If the child disregards the rules, this can lead to a punishment appropriate to the situation, but corporal punishment is prohibited in this parenting style. In addition to the clearly defined rules, the freedom of action in which the children can develop freely and live their creativity and initiative is also specified.

The child's opinion is just as important as that of the parents and is heard so that parents and children are in dialogue with each other. If the children resist the parents, the parents stick to their point of view, but try to listen to the child's side in a conversation and to find a common solution. The child grows up with a lot of parental support, emotional warmth, and love. This leads to a close relationship between parents and children.

In anti-authoritarian education the opposite is lived. The children are brought up freely, so they can decide almost everything for themselves, since a "no" from the parents almost never comes, just as there are no rules that need to be adhered to. The parents let the children decide if they have any questions or problems, so that the children can live according to the pleasure principle. These freedoms are granted to every child, regardless of age.

The anti-authoritarian education in its extreme form in today's society almost no longer exists, since it is today as judged critically becomes. This form of education can still be found in a weakened form at selected private kindergartens or schools.

Do punishments help in education?

Punishments are popular in education and are widely used. Mostly it is not a question of a punishment in the form of physical violence, but of a psychological one, such as Withdrawal of love, additional tasks or reparations. The punishments can lead to the desired behavioral goal if certain things are observed.

The wrong behavior should be logically and temporally related to the punishment. Furthermore, the punishment should be proportionate and not arbitrary, but announced. All in all, punishments should be an exception and under no circumstances should they be used with babies or toddlers, as they cannot understand them at all and are only weakened in their self-confidence.

In addition, the positive and trusting relationship between parents and children can be damaged by punishments given to the child Offense, hatred, defiance and insecurity can arise.

Instead of a lump sum as with childcare allowance, applicants receive a percentage of what they earned before the birth of their child. Accordingly, the parental allowance is calculated individually for each household in one Money margin of at least 300 and a maximum of 1,800 euros per month and child. This money is paid for a maximum of 14 months compared to the childcare allowance and only if the partner uses at least two months of this time, so that fathers should also be more involved in the care and upbringing of the child.

In the case of an adoption or taking in a child in full-time care, the right to parental leave begins as soon as the child is in the household. Often these are older children, which is why the three years are not the first three years of life, but any three years up to their eighth birthday.

Even with a normal birth it is possible, if the employer agrees, to transfer 24 weeks of parental leave, i.e. to take it to a later period up to the child's 8th birthday. In this transferred time however, unemployment insurance does not apply, this only applies to the first three years after the child is born.

Parental leave must be requested from the employer at least seven weeks in advance. During this period of parental leave, the employee may not be dismissed, exceptions are only possible in very small companies.

Despite the educational mandate for the parents, which shows that they have the right and the duty to care for and bring up the child, they can organize the upbringing at their own discretion.
